Why You’ve Been Denying Your Wildly Impossible Goal (And How to Finally Claim It)
There’s a goal you’ve quietly carried for years.
You don’t talk about it. You barely let yourself think about it.
Because if you admitted you wanted it — really wanted it — you’d have to face all the reasons you think you’ll never get there.
So instead, you water it down. You play it safe.
You stay busy. Sensible. Focused on everyone else’s needs.
And your Wildly Impossible Goal gets buried just beneath the surface of your life, tugging at you.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And you’re not broken.
You’re just human.
What Is a WIG, Anyway?
The concept of a WIG (Wildly Impossible Goal) comes from author and life coach Martha Beck, who defines it as the goal that feels so meaningful and exciting — but so out of reach — that you almost don’t dare admit it.
“A WIG is a goal that pulls at your soul — and scares the hell out of your ego.” — Martha Beck
It’s not your ‘realistic’ goal.
It’s not your polite goal.
It’s the one that whispers, “There’s more for you.”
It’s the one you talk yourself out of because it would require you to believe in yourself in a whole new way.
Maybe you’ve said:
• “I’m too old to start now.”
• “I don’t have the talent or discipline.”
• “It’s just not practical with everything I’ve got going on.”
And so you focus on safe, sensible tasks. Or you don’t pick anything at all. You just… muddle along, vaguely restless but not sure why.
Until one day, you realize:
The most painful feeling isn’t failure. It’s regret.
What If You Didn’t Have a Plan B?
It is rumoured (but not confirmed) that Steve Jobs once said:
“If you have a Plan B, you’re not fully committed to Plan A.”
He wasn’t saying to throw caution to the wind. But he was pointing out something that hits hard at midlife:
We spend decades building fallback options… until we realise we’ve never really gone all-in on the life we wanted most.
At some point, you have to ask:
What if Plan A — your true goal, your real calling — deserves your full commitment, not your leftover energy?
What if the “wildly impossible” part is just your old self-image talking?

Introducing: The WIG Worksheet
To help you finally name and claim the goal that won’t leave you alone, we’ve created a powerful printable tool: The WIG Worksheet.
This isn’t about vision boards or wishful thinking.
It’s about unearthing the deep desire you’ve denied… and understanding why.
Inside, you’ll explore:
• The dream you’ve watered down
• The reasons you’ve dismissed it (fear, shame, practicality)
• Where those beliefs came from — and how to dismantle them
• A ritual to release what’s holding you back
• And finally, the courage to name your WIG out loud
You don’t need a 5-year plan.
You just need to get honest about what you really want — and take the first tiny, brave step.

Final Thought: You’re Allowed to Want What You Want
At Rewrite Midlife, we believe it’s never too late to answer the call of your life.
Not when you’re 35. Not when you’re 55. Not when you’re 70.
So ask yourself:
If you could begin again, with no fear of failure or judgment —
What would you dare to want?
Now go get the worksheet.
And let yourself want it for real this time.
